Otago Polytechnic continues to develop a range of short courses focused on teaching practical hands-on skills at front-line and managerial levels of the travel and tourism sector.

Otago Polytechnic is located in Dunedin New Zealand, near tourism hotspots including Queenstown, Wanaka and Fiordland. However, if you want to study further afield… well, the world’s your oyster! We are developing the capacity to support your learning in these courses wherever you choose to be.

How these courses are structured

If you have decided to begin a career in tourism or coming back into the industry, then you might like to start with our introductory courses designed to set you up with the general skills and knowledge everyone working in the travel and tourism sector should have. But if you're already working in the area and can say you already have these general skills and knowledge, then you might prefer to go straight into your choice of the specialties we have developed. To obtain the qualification that this full programme has to offer, you will need to complete a work based research activity.

All the courses in this programme are spread across 3 areas: Introduction, Specialist, Work based research. Have a look, see what you think...

Introduction to Tourism

A day in the life of.... these core skills are introductory units which provide background knowledge about what careers are available in the tourism industry and what might be of interest to you in your future career. All core units are required to be completed and provide you with a National Certificate in Travel and Tourism (Core Skills) Level 3.

Please note: Otago Polytechnic plans to develop the introductory courses during February - July 2009. In the meantime, these courses are offered face to face at the Polytechnic.

Specialist area

These specialties focus on particular areas of the tourism industry. Tour guiding and travel operations are units that should be a priority for all people engaged in the travel and tourism sector and are complusory in the first year of study. In the second year of study you can select 3 specialties (two of which must be at level 5) and complete the research and work based project which is complusory. These specialties will also be available in 2009 via a mixture of class contact and online learning - and on completion, participants will receive a record of achievement as well as 30 credits towards the Diploma in Applied Travel and Tourism (Level 5).
